More enterprises consider cloud computing a viable technology, with nearly 60 percent saying they view it as a business enabler versus less than 40 percent who say the technology will take years to mature, if it ever does, according to a new report, “2010 FastView Survey: Cloud Computing Grows Up,” based on Yankee Group’s Anywhere Enterprise: 2010 U.S. Cloud Computing FastView Survey.
The survey also found the following:
-Private clouds win: Due to security and privacy issues, most enterprises (67 percent) prefer private/internal clouds to public cloud infrastructures.
-Google/Amazon envy: Enterprises want to make their IT cloud infrastructure like Amazon’s or Google’s, but just 17 percent say they view either vendor as a trusted cloud partner. Instead, 29 percent turn to systems integrators like Accenture, IBM and HP’s EDS, while 23 percent look to infrastructure vendors like Cisco and VMware.
“Cloud computing is on the cusp of broad enterprise adoption,” said Sheryl Kingstone, research director at Yankee Group and co- author of the report. “Because our survey breaks down the state of adoption and plans for platform-, infrastructure and software-as-a- service, it delivers great insights into the marketplace.”

When 7-year-old East Whittier resident Haedee Estrella started getting toothaches recently, she found herself in a bind.
Her parents didn’t have dental insurance and no way of paying for her fillings. But after a referral by a school nurse, it was the Whittier Assistance League to the rescue.
“She’s had a lot of treatment, but she’s a good patient,” said Phyllis Morton, who’s been a member of the Assistance League’s dental committee for six years.
The committee provides low-income families with affordable access to dental care and serves all the schools in the east and south Whittier districts as well as the Whittier Union High School District.
On Tuesday, little Haedee climbed into Whittier dentist Dr. Thomas Bigley’s chair and received two composite fillings for cavities in her baby teeth. Smiling stoically, the young girl withstood the procedure with poise, due in no small part to the calm and personable demeanor of Dr. Bigley.
Clad in khaki pants and a blue polo shirt, Bigley smiled down at his patient with instruments in hand and said, “It’s just like going to a birthday party. Wouldn’t that be fun to get all your friends in the chair and fix teeth?”
These low-cost services are made possible through the efforts of league volunteers and donors as well as several local dentists who offer their expertise at a reduced rate.
According to Morton, families receiving dental care for their children are responsible for paying a $10 fee for each visit. The league pays the balance for the cost of the visit, which is a discounted $100.
The dental program has an annual operating budget of $10,000 which is raised through the Bargain Bin thrift shop, Timeless Treasures antique store as well as annual Assistance League fundraisers.
Morton estimated that during the past five years, she has accompanied more than 50 patients to the dentist’s chair. She remembered one young girl who had an extra tooth growing in, which was adversely affecting her smile.
“She was self conscious and Bigley was able to take that tooth out and the parents were so grateful,” Morton said.

World and Olympic 100 metre champion Usain Bolt set the fastest time of the year so far in his first big race of the 2010 season in Daegu.
The Jamaican made a slow start at the Pre-Championships meeting in South Korea but recovered to power away from the rest of the field to claim victory in a time of 9.86 seconds.
Bolt’s compatriot Michael Frater was second, but he was almost three tenths of a second slower than his countryman in a time of 10.15secs.
American Mike Rodgers was third, ahead of Trell Kimmons.
Another American, Travis Padgett, had been tipped as the man likely to be closest to Bolt, but he trailed home in fifth place.
Bolt now moves on to Sunday’s Diamond League meeting in Shanghai, where he will race in the 200 metres.
