Bone drugs: threaten dental health

A University of Southern California School of Dentistry study concludes that some popular prescription medications for osteoporosis may cause death of cells (necrosis) in jawbone, resulting in pain, contributing to tooth loss, and significantly extending healing time after dental surgery.
Manufacturers of this class of drugs, which are known as bisphosphonates (e.g., Fosomax, Actonel, and Boniva), have asserted that only intravenous bisphosphonates may cause jaw necrosis while risk from oral forms is negligible. However, the study, published in The Journal of the American Dental Association, found that 4 percent of 208 patients taking oral forms of the medication experienced jaw necrosis. “Four percent is not negligible,” says lead researcher Parish Sedghizadeh, DDS. The drugs have a 10-year half-life in bone tissue, so your dentist should be told about present or past bisphosphonate use.
In addition to getting sufficient calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D, these are some other ways to keep your bones healthy:
* Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. According to research published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, diets high in protein and cereal grains make your body more acidic, leading to excretion of calcium and weaker bones. Fruits and vegetables preserve bones because they have an alkaline effect.
* Get plenty of lycopene, from tomatoes or a supplement

A SEEMING TREND of ever more extreme weather events is putting such pressure on Australian insurers that insurance may become too expensive for many property owners. Floods, storms, bushfires and other severe weather events accounted for more than 31.5% of all nonlife insurance claims in 2007, compared with 12.3% in 2000, according to KPMG in Australia. So far this year, bushfires in Victoria state have generated 9,105 claims and insured loss of A $1.12 billion ($733 million).

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Mutual Insurance Company has partnered with Hilb, Rogal and Hobbs (HRH) to offer a workers’ compensation purchasing group for hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and hospitality groups. Members of the Texas Lodging Group (TLG) get a premium discount, an industry-specific safety plan and potential dividends if they control their losses.
Texas Mutual Insurance Company underwrites the group, and HRH administers it. The group’s master agent, Michael Gabrielson of HRH, is a former Hilton hotel manager.
“One of the first things we considered before proposing this group to Texas Mutual was growth potential,” said Gabrielson. “Texas is a prime travel destination. We offer a wide range of tourist attractions located in diverse cities. We host some of the biggest events in the world, such as the South by Southwest Music Festival.”
Texas lodging room revenues increased 44 percent between 2004 and 2007, according to a March 2008 report issued by the Office of the Governor, Economic Development and Tourism. Annual 2007 roomnights sold, the true measure of consumer demand, increased by 3.1 percent over 2006
